He told her how his skin crawled when he spoke to the king; the darkness that he never noticed before seemed to permeate everything in the manor. Then he told her of his orders and how even Devona was against it. He felt the tears well up in his eyes as he recounted his night of cleansing and the release of the song bird. He showed her its feather, still soft and brilliant in color.

“Then I tripped over your pup and here we are.”

“My, that is quite the tale. So much, in so little time will affect everything we do going forward. Thank you for your honesty, now it is my turn. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. “I was born gifted as a scribe, not an uncommon gift, but one not very highly esteemed. I was also married as you know and lost my husband and brother to the flash floods while I carried our twins.”

All this he knew, but he felt her gaze harden on him and understood something was about to change in their relationship with what she said next.
